Pass The Mustard Seed Mulberry Jam

Apr 19, 2026    Pastor Neil Bell

This powerful message takes us deep into Luke 17, where Jesus confronts us with a radical teaching on forgiveness that shatters our comfortable religious boundaries. When the disciples heard they must forgive someone seven times in one day if they genuinely repent, they cried out for increased faith—and Jesus responds with the mustard seed lesson, but this time paired with a striking image: the black mulberry tree. This isn't just any tree; it's a deeply rooted, invasive plant that can destroy foundations, infiltrate water systems, and regenerate even when cut down. Jesus uses this vivid metaphor to illustrate unforgiveness and bitterness in our hearts. Like the mulberry tree, unresolved anger and resentment grow deep beneath the surface, spreading their destructive roots through our relationships, our families, and our spiritual lives. We may think we've dealt with our hurt by simply cutting it off at the surface, but Jesus calls us to something far more radical: speaking with authority to that deeply rooted pain and commanding it to be uprooted and cast into the sea. This requires mustard seed faith—not faith measured by size, but faith that is tenacious, continually fed, and renewed. The challenge before us is profound: we cannot control others, but we can control ourselves. We must watch our hearts, examine our lives daily, and recognize that limitless forgiveness isn't natural to our flesh—it requires the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit transforming us from within.
